Candidates

Sam M Mousa (Debt Elimination Party)

The university has been operating at a deficit that is affecting the student governance. My running partner and I would like to mitigate the damages of operating at such a loss. Our platform is to reform our spending and create a plan to eliminate needless spending.

Hamp Henning (OneKU)

My name is Hamp Henning and I am running to be your next Student Body President.  I believe in a Senate that engages with and delivers tangible results to every Jayhawk.   In my previous work both on and off the hill, I have worked to bring people together, advocate for student interests, and create meaningful change on our campus.  I am running because I have seen first hand the power the student voice has when we stand together.  I am committed to making the Senate more accessible and transparent, ensuring each student feels their needs are heard and represented.  Our University deserves leadership that prioritizes the students first.  Someone that fights for improved academic support systems, better mental health resources, and financial accessibility while keeping the Senate a proactive, not reactive, entity on campus.  The OneKU campaign is one of action, accountability, and making the Senate work for you, the student.  Together, we can establish a campus where every student has the resources and support necessary for them to succeed.  I would be honored to earn your vote!

Andrew Murga (Ad Astra)

I’m Andrew Murga and I am eager to serve as your next Student Body President. It has become increasingly apparent that the student body has become detached from pivotal decisions. As someone who hasn’t been involved in student senate, I’m excited to bring fresh perspective during a time where the average student feels underrepresented. Our student senate has struggled with accessibility, rendering many students disengaged from processes that should empower and represent them. It is imperative that we cultivate greater transparency and accountability within our governing bodies. As President, my commitments are clear: I will advocate for enhanced academic resources, address our pressing parking shortages, expand professional development opportunities, and increase engagement across diverse student groups. Moreover, I will fortify our mental health support systems to ensure timely and effective assistance. My candidacy is about transforming our campus into a community where every student has access to necessary resources and can influence the decisions that shape their experience. Together, let’s bridge the gaps in our governance and reinvigorate student involvement.

Zachary Wallentine (Debt Elimination Party)

Prioritizing spending directed at candidates is a high priority. Allocating the same funds to the newspaper for circulation and publicizing debates would be a preferable model to the status quo.

Douglas Jamal (OneKU)

My name is Douglas Jamal, and I'm a Junior studying Philosophy and Global Studies with a double minor in Arabic and Political Science. I plan to run for this role to better address and recognize student concerns and to ensure transparency between the student senate and all students on Campus. I believe that if we prioritize our students, the student senate will naturally begin to thrive as well. I particularly feel able to fill this role to better help with student interaction because I have heard student concerns, and I have recognized reoccurring issues that could be fixed with better communication and interaction between our student government, the student body, and the administration. This is an effort that will not be simple, however, the insight and perspectives from different organizations and fields of study will allow the senate to better prepare for upcoming academic years with better financial decisions and allocations so that we are able to continue aid to many while showcasing senate's other capabilities, which I hope to bring out so that the student body understands that senate is there to support them, even if it cannot always be financially.

Henry Whalen (Ad Astra)

As a junior at the university, I have had a wide array of opportunities that would not have been possible anywhere else. I feel compelled to give back to a university that has given me so much. With that being said, I also have seen many ways in which our campus can improve. I want to bring back the excitement and tradition that made Homecoming Weekend a highlight of the year. Over the past decade, it hasn’t lived up to its full potential, and I believe we can do better. By working with student organizations, alumni, and the university, I plan to create a Homecoming experience that truly unites our community. Additionally, me and my running mate will advocate for the creation of an online portal where students can access recorded lectures, forums and other academic resources. We will also work to enhance our SAC and Wingspan applications to increase tutoring access. The value of job preparation is of utmost importance to us and we will work with local and state-wide businesses and corporations to develop internship programs that provide students with real-world experience in their field of study. We also will expand counseling services by increasing the number of counselors, reducing wait times, and introducing online booking for easier access.

Students in the in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who will have completed less than 60 hours as of Monday April 7th 2025.

Aidan Foust

I believe that students here have the right to have the tools at their disposal to achieve whatever they put their minds towards. I believe that they should be able to have their clubs and groups they participate in be properly funded. I know students work hard here but the work matters a lot more when there is governance here that supports them to the fullest extent. I want to be able to listen to the opinion of the students here in order to represent their wants and needs for this University. Together we can make a better KU.

In all, I hope to be a part of something that can contribute to growth and make a difference for everyone, and good luck to all other candidates!

Chloe Morse (OneKU)

My name is Chloe Morse and I am a sophomore at KU majoring in psychology. I have enjoyed my academic journey thus far at KU, as I have been supported academically and given numerous ways to be more involved within the university. When I was informed that I had been elected as senator for the KU Student Senate during my freshman year of college, I was enthused, as I am dedicated to making KU students’ voices heard. My first term as a senator has allowed me to be more aware of my community’s well-being while making smart decisions for the university’s ability to prosper. I would love to be able to continue serving as a senator at KU in order to keep fulfilling my loyalty to KU and my peers.

If given the opportunity, I hope to improve campus culture here at KU. Thank you!

William Harkleroad (Sunbeam Caucus)

I’m William Harkleroad, and I’m running to put students first. I stand with the University Daily Kansan because a free press keeps student government accountable. I support SafeRide because no student should have to choose between safety and affordability. And I back our Athletic Department because school spirit unites us all. Transparency, safety, and pride—that’s my commitment to KU.

Quinn Schmidgall (OneKU)

My name is Quinn Schmidgall and I'm currently a sophomore studying Political Science on a pre-law track. I have a driving fascination with government, specifically the United States Constitution. I strongly believe that my experience as an intern in the Kansas Legislature for a state senator qualifies me as an acceptable candidate for the KU Student Senate. I continue to learn the logistics of the legislative system and consider it a personal honor to be involved in our great state’s political process. As a KU Student Senator, I would do everything in my power to fight for the ordinary student, especially those who are paying their own tuition. Bringing down regular student costs would be my number one priority. With hope and dedication, we can accomplish anything we put our minds to.

I'm new to Student Senate but not to school politics. I've seen a lot of disagreement with the Student Senate's recent decisions, specifically regarding The UDK. I want to be a fresh face and bring new perspective that represents our students and what they truly want.

Pearce Zuba

I am a student who has many years of experience working with congressional figures in both state and national politics, this line of work suits people like me and it’s the reason why I want to run for senate. I want to make a difference in our community in any way I can and I would work hard to be a strong problem solver that any other Senator would want to work with. I pride myself on being open and honest in conversations and debates, which can make a lot of others view me as a good mediator for many on and off campus issues regarding both the budget and senate. I look forward to working for the people of KU in the future. Thank You for this opportunity and Rock Chalk!

Cici Hunter (Community Affairs)

Hi everyone! My name is Cici Hunter, and I am a Sophomore pre-law Psych major. While I plan to go into law, the school of Human Sciences is one I hold dear. The school of Education & Human Sciences is so massively underrepresented despite Senates functioning, which is to distribute the funds students pay for their education in a way that best serves the student body; This is a statement I feel needs to be reaffirmed in Senate and on our campus, not just for our Education and Human sciences students, but for everyone. Our money should be spent in a way that best serves all of us, not just our football team. I have the voice to carry that message, and with a senator position, I can be that voice for all those who can't do it for themselves.

Sebastian B. McCoy

My name is Sebastian B. McCoy, and I am passionate about making college a more inclusive and accessible experience for all students. Coming from a low-income background and navigating life with epilepsy, I understand the challenges many students face, from financial barriers to accessibility concerns. As a member of the KU Marching Band and an advocate for workers’ rights, I value community, equity, and student well-being. I want to join Student Senate to amplify student voices, push for policies that support marginalized communities, and ensure that resources are allocated where they are needed most. I will work to align funding goals and policies towards a future that promotes the good news of Jesus throughout our campus and community. Secondly, I am a biochemistry major and can uniquely represent the interests of the numerous but underrepresented premedical, STEM, and research active students on campus. KU should be a campus devoted to the pursuit of knowledge and discovery. Therefore, I will work to reorient funding towards intellectual pursuits that focus on academic merit and scholarship. Finally, I will work to reduce unnecessary fees and wasteful spending to provide the most affordable education for all students while supporting efforts to improve the parking situation as well as address health and safety issues experienced by many KU freshmen and other students living in on-campus housing.

Bella Stockwood (Ad Astra)

My name is Bella Stockwood, and I am excited at the opportunity to run for a Student Senate position. I am involved in many communities on campus, which have compelled me to give back and be a part of something bigger here at the University of Kansas. Although I have not previously served in a Student Senate position, I feel that makes me the perfect candidate. Student government has been run by many of the same familiar faces. This idea of career campus politics has led to little change and not enough attention paid to the recurring issues that we still face. I would love to be in a role where I can be a voice for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as the university as a whole.

Jillian Opie (One KU)

I’m Jillian Opie, and I’m excited to join the University of Kansas’s Student Senate because of my deep passion for government and public service. As the CLAS Underclassmen senator, I hope to listen to different perspectives in such a diverse college to better understand the needs of students. With my background in debate, I’m used to speaking up, and using my resources to problem-solve. I want to serve students and welcome to a campus they enjoy whether that be a small change or a big difference. If there’s something underclassmen are passionate, I hope to do my very best to make a difference. I understand the importance of community, and I’m hoping you all will elect me to continue to use my voice for change.

Kate Eckert (Ad Astra)

I am Kate Eckert, a current senator for the college, and I am running for reelection. As a philosophy and economics major who has worked with various political campaigns and nonprofits, I understand how to balance pragmatic solutions with the concerns and needs of the student population. If elected, I will prioritize enhancing academic resources, expanding professional development opportunities, and ensuring that student voices are heard across campus. I will work to address issues like parking shortages, improve mental health support, and create an environment where all students—no matter their background or experience—feel empowered to get involved. Together, let’s work to create a campus that better reflects our diverse needs and ambitions.

Brice Beasley-Murray

My name is Brice Beasley-Murray. I am a current Freshman studying psychology, sociology, and social work as well. I have always been a firm believer in governmental integrity and want to ensure that the student body is aware of the issues that affect them – having passionate, informed representatives who are eager to speak up and hold others accountable is the best way to uphold these values. While sometimes hard decisions have to be made, it is important that this is communicated clearly and sympathetically to those who are affected by them. Antonique' Flemons (Ad Astra)

My name is Antonique’ and I’m a non-traditional student studying Journalism and Business. I took an eight-year hiatus from academia to travel and learn about all the things school couldn’t teach me. As the trend for nontraditional students continues to increase, I think it's important to hold space for their eclectic journey within a culture that isn’t targeted for them. While the pursuit to complete their studies is similar to the rest of the student body; the experience is completely different for non-traditional students. Having a level of awareness of systems and true adulthood while being in a college space could feel stifling in many aspects. I want to bring awareness and ideas to cultivate more opportunities for non-traditional students to find their footing while being challenged in various aspects with a like-minded community.

While living off-campus might instill a feeling of detachment from the daily action on campus, I strive to be an advocate for all KU students with the unique experiences of off campus living. I am Wangeshi Macharia, and I am a Marketing major, intending to pursue law. In my freshman year, I served as the Residence Hall Senator as I lived on-campus. Now that I have experienced living off-campus, I am eager to better some aspects and take action in areas where KU students would like to see improvement. My goal is to make sure that the distance between the school and where students live does not factor in the level of attention or advocacy given to all off-campus students.

Nolan Young

After hearing about the possibility of the SafeRide program being defunded, I decided to get in the race. SafeRide is a very valuable service to KU students and I would like to see it continue. I have a strong interest in public service and am a proud jayhawk serving the university. I'm honest, respectful, fair minded, inclusive, and kind. I would be honored to serve the people of KU.

Off-campus students are a vital part of KU’s community, and I want to ensure our voices are heard in decisions that impact our experience.

Victoria Hunter

I’m Victoria Hunter, and I want to run for student senate to try and help KU maintain community spaces. Last semester, KU decided to merge many diverse organizations into one, the student engagement center. This hurt many people. This led to cuts in programs those centers provided. I’m running to make sure that KU is willing to fund and maintain programs that are able to help everyone no matter who they are, what their identity is, or where they came from. KU is a diverse place and therefore needs many diverse programs to make sure everyone is accommodated.  I will fight for all people and their accessibility in KU. I personally would not have felt as accepted my first year without the Center for Sexuality and Gender Diversity, and I want to make sure all students have opportunities to feel accepted.

Ben Shea

Hello! I am Ben Shea, a sophomore studying Aerospace Engineering here at KU. I am a member of the Marching Jayhawks, and served as a replacement senator last semester. I have lived off campus since the end of my freshman year, and use the bussing system to commute to campus daily. With the recent policy changes forcing non-freshman out of campus housing, I know all off campus students are wondering how their services will be impacted. My main issues I'm fighting for include: expanding off campus bussing routes, increasing support to SafeRide to expand service farther off campus, and to protect crucial funding of KU services that us off campus students use.

Evanna Stark

I am already in Student Senate, but I wish to continue to serve this community as a Student Senator and represent those who live off campus. I wish to be able to make the everyday life for an off-campus student as efficient as possible.

My name is Hazel Sylvester and I’m a Junior majoring in English and minoring in Social Justice in the U.S. As a resident of Sellards and a proud member of the Scholarship Hall community, I’m looking for opportunities to give back and support the culture of inclusivity that we’ve worked so hard for. Local engagement is very important to me and I believe that I have the soft skills to represent and advocate for our halls to the wider campus community. I transferred to KU from Hutchinson Community College, where I built lasting connections as the Chair of Student Relations for the Honors Program. I truly believe in the Scholarship Hall values and I would be thrilled to represent us in the KU Student Senate.

Eduardo Paredes

My name is Eduardo Paredes, and I'm a Freshman double majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology. I am a current resident of the Scholarship Halls. As a Scholarship Hall resident, DEI Chair at K.K., and an active leader on campus, I'm passionate about advocating for our community and ensuring our voices are heard. I want to work on initiatives that support student well-being, improve resources for SH residents, and create more opportunities for student engagement. My goal is to be an advocate who listens, collaborates, and takes action. I hope to ensure that SH students are not only heard but also empowered.

Josee Hoshaw

Hello, I’m Josee, a current Freshman studying both public administration and criminal justice. As a resident and DEI chair at Miller hall, I am deeply invested in the community, traditions, and values of the Scholarship Halls. Our community is tightly knit, and has unique needs that the Student Senate must address. Through this position, I hope to protect the tradition of affordable, merit-based housing for the diverse range of individuals in our community, while also advocating for policies that serve to benefit residents. I would be honored to represent the Scholarship Halls and ensure our voices are heard. Together, we can preserve our traditions while pushing for meaningful change that strengthens our community for years to come.
