History

Over 40 years ago, KU's campus was front and center for social and political activism. KU was also facing dwindling support from the state. Russell C. Leffel, a first year law student, felt such a sense of passion for the issue that he formed a group called Students Concerned for Higher Education in Kansas. This student group voiced the concerns of students through peaceful protests and lobbying efforts. Their mission was to gain support for higher education and to pressure the state of Kansas to repriortize its commitment to students continuing their education. Leffel's passion inspired Student Senate to create an official higher education advocacy group in the mid 1990's called the Student Legislative Awareness Board.
